Plumbing leaks can be difficult to visualise as the pipes are generally hidden from view within the wall cavity or embedded in the solid brick wall. The knuckles and joints are always the weak points in any pressurised water system as washers and seals deteriorate and will ultimately fail. Diagnosing them without destroying walls can be difficult. Professional leak detection equipment can locate leaks in pipes hidden within a wall cavity or embedded in brick or concrete.

Leaks from water drainage points (non pressurised) can normally be tested using the flood test. By simply filling the suspicious shower recess, or laundry trough, a leak should be easily detectable. In the instance of the shower recess, once filled, it just needs to be observed for any signs of leaks.
