Leaking balconies are an extremely common problem throughout Melbourne and the rest of the State. The only reason balconies tend to leak is because the waterproofing was deficient. Time and time again we have seen inadequate waterproofing due simply to a common practise of cutting corners.
When a balcony leaks the simplest way to determine the leak points is via a flood test. This is where the balcony is saturated with water and then the leakpoints are observed. Another diagnostic tool which can be used is a thermal imaging camera which can highlight the wetter areas by recording temperature differentials. However, the best diagnostic tool for a leaking balcony remains the flood test.

This balcony had never been waterproofed and over time the ceiling of the room beneath was destroyed and was uninhabitable.

Before applying the waterproofing membrane, all joints in the tile underlay must be bandaged and sealed (above).
